Mavericks Win Franchise’s First Governors’ Cup

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri – The Missouri Mavericks captured the franchise’s first Governors’ Cup with 8-0 shutout win over the St. Charles Chill on Tuesday night at the Independence Events Center.  The blowout win was more than enough to secure 2 points in the standings to push the Mavs over the point edge to claim the Governors’ Cup with 90 points atop the Central Hockey League ranks.

Goaltender Erno Suomalainen put out a stellar performance between the pipes for the Mavs, stopping all 21 of St. Charles’ attempts on goal, giving Missouri its first shutout victory of the season since November 9th.

The Mavericks exploded onto the board in the first period, charged by an early attempt from St. Charles on rough up Team Captain Sebastien Thinel.  First on the board was the man himself, Thinel, tallying his 22nd goal of the season for the Mavs, assisted by Eric Castonguay and Andrew Courtney.  Then Andrew Courtney made his mark on the game with a lamp-lighter at 13:17 of the opening period, aided by Mathieu Gagnon.  Only 33 seconds later Colten Hayes brought a crowd of the Best Fans in the Central Hockey League to their feet once again to give the Mavericks a 3-0 advantage over the Chill.  Sebastien Thinel and Mike Ramsay tallied the helpers on Hayes’ goal.

Just before the midway point of the period, John Snowden of the St. Charles Chill dropped the gloves with Mavericks defenseman Matt Stephenson behind the play.  In an uncommon turn of events, Snowden was given an additional match penalty major for biting Stephenson on the wrist during the brawl.

On the power play and leading by 3, Andrew Courtney put up his second goal of the night assisted by Eric Castonguay and Mike Ramsay.  Then Rookie forward Tyler Currier bumped up the Mavs already impressive lead again with a second period goal at the tail end of the frame to give Missouri a 5-0 edge. Mike Ramsay and Obi Aduba were credited with the helpers.

Holding a 5-0 advantage, Sebastien Thinel wasted no time furthering his team’s offensive drive with another goal only 46 seconds into the final period.  Colten Hayes and Andrew Courtney assisted on the 6th goal of the night.  Colt King added his name to the score sheet at the 12:35 mark of the final frame with the 7th goal of the night, aided by Mike Ramsay and Dave Pszenyczny.

It was a race for the hat trick on the ice, with Thinel and Courtney both towing 2 goals behind them, and Courtney made the connection on the power play with less than 2 minutes left in the game to raise the Mavs’ lead up to 8-0 over the Chill.  Andrew Courtney’s hat trick—his second of the season, also ties him with Eric Castonguay at 31 single-season goals, a franchise record set by Castonguay on Sunday night vs the Quad City Mallards.

The final horn sounded and the Mavericks skated from the ice of the Independence Events Center as Champions of the 2013-14 Regular Season with the 2014 Governors’ Cup and a substantial 8-0 victory over the St. Charles Chill.

The Mavericks play their next two games at home against the Tulsa Oilers on Friday, March 28th and Saturday, March 29th.  Both games start at 7:056pm.  Tickets are available in person at the Box Office, and online at TicketMaster.com.
